Repressed Sex

Ahhh those good ol’ days at Ethi, when getting on a 11-series bus meant you’d get groped for sure. Full frontal assault or a guy poking his hard on into your ass through layers of clothing – take your pick. On one memorable occasion, a kind soul decided to take a lesson in Biology and flash us his gonads. Shocked my non-stop-jabber mate into Mute mode for a whole day – something of a record.

What is it with guys and these sort of animal behaviour? Is it repressed sex, as some bright soul stated on a blog somewhere? They are not getting any and as self service isn’t quite as fulfilling, they decide to let themselves loose on the girls out there – is that it? I do not know the reasoning behind this, if at all there’s any, and chances are the red blooded males that get into the act are clueless as to what they are trying to achieve either.

What do they aim for? A grope? A feel? Ok now you’ve felt a girl up, got a nice buzz going – now what? Jump her? Rape her and get it off your system? What?

As far as I know, there’s no point in even going to the cops as they operate under the typical sentiment of ‘well, you are dressed in such a way I know you have boobs and other female apparatus, so you must’ve asked for it!’ There was even this case of some poor girl in Mumbai getting raped in the police station. So, where do we go from here?

This kind of behaviour is on the rise apparently – guys all over the country have decided the women are easy pickings and they can just cop a feel or worse any time of day or night. Why the hell will it stop, unless something happens to make them stop? These lecherous bastards have been doing it for years and as nothing has been done to stop them, they see no reason to stop at the juvenile level and are just graduating. And why ever not? What is there for them to fear?

I feel that when a day has come when a person has to rethink about indulging in the simplest of pleasures like going to the beach or for a solitary walk or any of the other innocent joys of life, then the time has come for a shake-down. Time for the fat cats in the so-called government to actually do the job they were ‘elected’ for – govern the bloody place and make sure there’s some sort of order. What kind of a country are they running where accompanied women can’t even welcome in the New Year without getting raped in the process?

Who was it that said “until the day a woman can go for a walk at midnight and return safe, we haven’t got true freedom”? Looks like we aren’t free yet.

Like any other girl in this country (or perhaps all over the world), I have tried to analyze this perverted tendency in men, and I fail to reach any logical reasoning. I do not understand how brushing against a girl can give them an “ego-boost” or any form of satisfaction. Whistling or passing lewd comments too are beyond my understanding. Perhaps they have the same effect as using abusive language against someone. It gives a momentary satisfaction of having vented out your frustration. I am ignorant of the “pleasure” one derives from eve-teasing. Is there a hidden rapist in every eve-teaser or is it just a “harmless” fun-activity? I can never tell. But all I know and wish to convey to men all over is that no woman can ever enjoy it, if that is what they feel (thanks to some bollywood movies, where teasing is a first step towards love-affair). We deserve to breathe the air without being afraid of who we are sharing it with. We should be able to walk on the roads without being conscious about men staring at us. And we should be able to get rid of the thought process that women “invite” such kind of behavior from men.

Me: Puja, we can talk and reiterate all we want. Who’s listening?!

lol….ain’t nothing 2 giggle abt…but the sheer frankness coupled with some bold blasting prompted the simper…..
1stly appreciate the way you have made your point….splendid…
guess not much one can do. illiteracy, i feel is the main cause if not the root.
but to an extent can be avoided by being a little conscious of the surroundings and staying alert…

Me: I think all Indian women – well a majority – are instinctively conscious of where they are and on a permanent state of alert lest a moron decides to push his luck. Like Amrita says, nurture plays a big role. My question is, how to curb the current level of menace?

I have one vivid experience to recall- I was in my 12th std attending numerous tuition classes for the board exam. One particular class was farther away and I used to travel by bus. One particular evening, the bus did not come for a long time and the one which came finally was too crowded for words. I was not comfortable standing alone in the bus stand hence decided to brave the crowd. The moment I boarded, a man behind me started feeling me all over as if he has never seen a woman in his life. There was no space for me to even turn around and punch this fellow. In spite of my repeated shouts, none from the bus bothered to stop the man. That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands and gave the a**hole one hard punch (backward leg punch) with my sandals. I was lucky to wear a small heels shoe which broke at the force with which I hit that fellow. The next stop I got down, found a cobbler and walked back home to release my pent up anger.

Such people need to be taught a lesson. And yes, as long as such animals exist, our freedom exists only on paper.

Me: Agree with you there, Lavs, that these idiots need to be taught a few lessons. And it was mighty brave of you to retaliate. I don’t think I would’ve! I am always worried that if I stand up to one today, he might come back with a few hundred goony mates tomorrow!

You know, DG, I’ve never met an Indian woman who HASNT been harassed. Not one. Including my mom and aunts. And what I want to know is, what sort of families do these men come from? Who is it that tells them it’s ok to behave like this? Is it the movies where the hero keeps bugging the heroine until she falls for him (yeah right)? The govt is only one aspect, I think the home is much more important.

Me: Ams, of course families play a massive role in shaping a person. I think our blind attitude towards boys and their belligerent attitude, explaining things away with the standard “oh boys will be boys” and looking at minor rowdy acts as sowing wild seeds are all to blame. But my question is: how are we to stop the idiots on the streets who seem to think women are fair game?

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but I cant believe I found an ethirajian on a random blog surf!!! I have been reading your blog on and off, but this post just made me comment!
I too remember the horrid bus rides to ethi! Thank god for the ladies sp. busses though. Even if you had to fight to get in and save seats by throwing your handkerchiefs in through the windows!

Me: Another Ethi girl? Boy this is much more effective than the gazillion Alumni.net, Orkut and Facebook groups eh what? Ahhh your seat grabbing techniques take me back – I always used to chuck my Allied text – it was bulky and no one would want it. Hankies always got nicked but who would want to lay claim to a History of English Literature text?

As a teenager, I felt helpless against these boors. Now, as the mother of a soon-to-be-teenage girl, I feel just as helpless. I guess some caution and self-defense are the best means of keeping these b*****s off. Yes, it is the family that can put some sense into the boy’s head.

Btw, DG, you Ethi? Me too :)

Me: Yayy, Ethi! Day or Eve? Just read your blog – speaks to me a lot!! Will share a story with you about one of your posts one of these days. In the meantime, thanks for dropping in.

I can imagine you worrying your head over your daughter – I am worried about my son. I guess these days, the son / daughter line has blurred and we, as parents, worry period. sigh. Wonder why those that begat the monsters that pray on us missed that vital bit of parenting.
